Bicycling Magazine - How To Buy A Bike

Bicycling Magazine - How To Buy A Bike

Are you thinking of buying a bike? Take time to read the article referenced above.

Excerpt:
With a transit strike looming last December, New York City's billionaire mayor Michael Bloomberg did what any sensible urbanite would do: He bought a bike for commuting. Bloomberg dropped into Gotham Bikes in Tribeca and, after a carefully scripted photo-op, walked out with a shiny black Cannondale F300 mountain bike.

Great PR for Cannondale, but bad news for Bloomberg. Instead of buying one of the company's more commuter-friendly models (or the suave about-towner Bianchi Milano just behind him in The New York Times' front-page photo), Bloomberg selected a bike with knobby tires and a suspension fork, better suited for the trail than the street. "We offered to put some smooth, Specialized Armadillo tires on the bike," says Ismael Torres, who rang up the $550 sale, "but he thought the knobbies would be more durable."

Even the insanely rich and powerful can end up with the wrong bike. "We try to encourage people to focus on their needs instead of their wants," says Torres. "But, obviously, it's hard."

Today- feeling so tired, I'm going to bed early, good night

Just got back from an Elders Board Meeting, more frequent than usual,
as we are going through a transition stage. Feeling very tired.
Meeting started at 6:00PM with a Pizza dinner, ended at 10:00PM.

Our Senior Pastor is moving, Lord willing, by the end of November.
This is dependent on their house here being sold so that they can
finalize the purchase of the house they found at town they will be
moving to (Cobourg, Ontario).

I am also feeling so tired as I am now probably because Paul and I
went for a bike ride earlier this afternoon. Got back home by 5:00PM
and I had to be at the church by 6:00PM and I was also assigned to
bring our Pizza dinner. Called ahead to order the pizza, showered and
changed, made it to my scheduled appointment on time. Bravo!!

Anyway, back to our bike ride, we took the usual route to Old Montreal, against a head wind, struggling to do 20kph - 22kph :) On the way back though, it was a different story, we now had the tail wind. We were reaching speeds of 40+kph on the bike path. Not much traffic this afternoon (on the bike path), mainly, I am guessing, because of the cold temperature and the strong wind. By the way, the speed limit at the bike path is 20kph :)

Another good ride Pauly boy!

Ain't nothing like the real thing (Coke), Tita Nil

La Ronde amusement park (Six Flags), Ile Notre Dame, Montreal. Tita Nil loves to drink Coke (no Coke taste alike). That's a Coca-Cola basketball Paul won in one of the games at La Ronde that day. The Real Thing! Posted by Hello

Many conferences and books share how to make your marriage wildly happy based on your personal fulfillment. These resources look good on the outside, but many really are a cheap substitute.

Truthfully, strong marriages are principally built on self-denial. When you're willing to drive the kids to soccer practice even when you don't want to, or bite your lip when your wife wants to talk about her day when you're trying to watch Sports Center - you're adding another pillar to the long bridge of marital strength. Want to have a strong marriage? Seek her happiness above your own.

Play In Traffic

Good read from Bicycling.com

Play In Traffic - Sharing the road with your four-wheeled brethren doesn't have to be scary. You just have to know the rules.

By Joe Lindsey, Contributing Writer

Traffic may be nerve-racking to ride in, but it doesn't have to be a scene from Death Race 2000. To get from point A to point B in one piece, remember: Don't trust turn signals until drivers turn, don't assume motorists see you, and don't assume they know the rules of the road. Below are five skills, from easy to advanced, that will get you through the four-wheeled zoo legally and safely.

18C, sunny, 16km winds, let's meet at 53rd avenue

Pilo, this was taken on May 17,2004 Posted by Hello

Nice ride roadies- Paul and Tito Pilo.

Pilo was wondering earlier when the picture above was taken. He's lost a over 20 pounds (is that right?) since then and a couple of inches from his waist line. Bravo Pilo!!

Almost 40km (paul and I), to Old Montreal and back, the usual route, head winds, average 29kph (Paul), 28pkh(Tito Lits & Tito Pilo).

Tomorrow's forecast looks iffy. Tennis anyone?

I'll take Trish's bike to the shop tomorrow, have them take a closer look at the rim / spokes, to look for any minute burrs, small but sharp enough to puncture the tube after a few minutes it's be installed. With this problem taken cared of, I'll have them put new set of Continental Duraskin+K tires and new tubes, and hopefully Trish won't be experinecing tire punctures for sometime. Never had a tire puncture on my Conti's, logged over 3000 kms on it, no problem. I was told by the bike mechanic over at the Atwater shop that it's a good tire for training rides, a tire of choice by many Pros for their training rides.

Have you ridden your bike lately? Have I told you lately that I love you??

Seven Reasons Not To Mess With Kids

Paul and Ian, Mom with Nikki and Erika, Pam- taken at the Kahirup Picnic 2004 Posted by Hello

1- A little girl was talking to her teacher about whales. The teacher said
it was physically impossible for a whale to swallow a human because even
though it was a very large mammal its throat was very small. The little
girl stated that Jonah was swallowed by a whale. Irritated, the teacher
iterated that a whale could not swallow a human; it was physically
impossible. The little girl said, "When I get to heaven I will ask Jonah".
The teacher asked, "What if Jonah went to hell?" The little girl replied, "Then you ask him".
2- A Kindergarten teacher was observing her classroom of children while they were drawing. She would occasionally walk around to see each child's work. As she got to one little girl who was working diligently, she asked what the drawing was. The girl replied, "I'm drawing God." The teacher paused and said, "But no one knows what God looks like." Without missing a beat, or looking up from her drawing, the girl replied, "They will in a minute."
3- A Sunday school teacher was discussing the Ten Commandments with her five and six year olds. After explaining the commandment to "honor" thy Father and thy Mother, she asked, "Is there a commandment that teaches us how to treat our brothers and sisters?" Without missing a beat one little
boy (the oldest of a family) answered, "Thou shall not kill."
4- One day a little girl was sitting and watching her mother do the dishes at the kitchen sink. She suddenly noticed that her mother had several strands of white hair sticking out in contrast on her brunette head. She
looked at her mother and inquisitively asked, "Why are some of your hairs white, Mom? "Her mother replied, "Well, every time that you do something wrong and make me cry or unhappy, one of my hairs turns white." The little girl thought about this revelation for a while and then said, "Momma, how come ALL of grandma's hairs are white?"
5- The children had all been photographed, and the teacher was trying to persuade them each to buy a copy of the group picture. "Just think how nice it will be to look at it when you are all grown up and say, 'There's
Jennifer, she's a lawyer,' or 'That's Michael, He's a doctor.' A small voice at the back of the room rang out, "And there's the teacher, She's dead."
6- A teacher was giving a lesson on the circulation of the blood. Trying to make the matter clearer, she said, "Now, class, if I stood on my head, the blood, as you know, would run into it, and I would turn red in the face.."
"Yes," the class said. "Then why is it that while I am standing upright in the ordinary position the blood doesn't run into my feet?" A little fellow shouted, "Cause your feet ain't empty."
7-The children were lined up in the cafeteria of a Catholic elementary school for lunch. At the head of the table was a large pile of apples. The nun made a note, and posted on the apple tray: "Take only ONE. God is
watching." Moving further along the lunch line, at the other end of the table was a large pile of chocolate chip cookies. A child had written a note, "Take all you want. God is watching the apples."

Town of St-Anne De Bellevue

Paul on his Giant OCR2 road bike-St-Anne De Bellevue Posted by Hello

Beautiful weather, sunny, a mild 14C, winds calm, who could resist. Paul and I could not, so we went out for a ride to the Town of St-Anne De Bellevue, a 45 km ride, round trip.

And not long after we got back from Annie's Pilo calls to ask if we'd like to ride with him. I knew that on Wednesday evenings he's got his French language class, and that's why Paul and I decided to ride earlier. Well, he says that it so nice outside he'd rather go for a bike ride than go to his French class :) . Sorry sir, I do not want to over stress my knees, oops, I meant my bike frame (lots of pot holes, as you know, on the way to St-Anne's, through the town of Senneville).

Talking about potholes, we've noticed that someone took the time and effort to mark the potholes and other road aberrations with a fluorescent paint, so as to call the bike rider's attention to the spot. Whoever you are, God bless you!!

Also, this same person wrote on the pavement, just right after the climb up the HILL (you know, that used to be infamous Senneville hill), "whoooof!" It must have been intended to exhort, to encourage the rider, to "allez!, allez!, go!, go!"

Paul and I obliged with a hearty, loud "WHOOOF!!"- just when you are relieved, happy, you've made it to the top of that HILL, happy to catch your breath. WHOOOF!

Have you ridden your bike lately?

Took a day off from riding yesterday. Busy with stuff: business stuff, personal stuff, church stuff, STUFF :)

The weather forecast looks very good today, better than yesterday. Lord willing I can go for a ride and burn some of those cals from the home-cooked Thanksgiving meals I took in over the weekend.
