Soft Drinks - Full of acid, sure, but what else?

How safe are your soft drinks?  Many of you know that soft drinks are full of acid that is harmful to the human body, however, prior to 2005, some soft drinks had very high levels of benzene.  In a study done in 2005 by the FDA, many soft-drinks and juices being sold then had levels of benzene greater than 1 parts be billion (ppb).  The FDA allows up to 5 ppb.

What is Benzene?
Benzene is a chemical agent that has been directly linked to leukemia.  Benzoate is found naturally in cranberry juice.  Benzene can be created by a reaction in the soft drink or soda or juice if it contains Vitamin C, or additive of Vitamin C, and a preservative like sodium benzoate or potassium benzoate.  Add a little heat and light, and you could have benzene.

Due to this finding by the FDA, some soft drink manufacturers are changing their formulas.
